Usually I would of just left the quarters alone if they werent too big but now since they stay up right i just give them another whack and get another split out of it. what a great use for that old tire that I couldnt get rid of.

Place an old tire like a 15" or 16" flat on the ground make 4-6 white lines 4-6" long equally spaced around the tire on the side wall where the tread begins or up to two inches smaller (closer to the wheel hole) in diameter than the tread diameter. At the end of each line draw another line straight out and down the front and to the bottom of the tread. Cut the white lines with a saber saw using a metal cutting blade to cut through the steel belting of the tire. You should have 4-6 legs you can pull outward and downward to make legs for the tire to stand up off the face of your splitting stump. If you just cut at the tread line you will get legs that can be lag bolted to the sides of the stump if you cut in the 2" in the side wall the extra lip will make good feet for the legs to stand up on and the feet can be bolted to the stump.

When I told my dad about this trick, he didn't know whether to pat me on the back for having found something so clever or be mad he didn't think of it when HE was a teenager and had to split wood!
