Uneven Decorative Hearth Bricks

Hello Everyone,
My hearth area has oddly spaced ledges in the brickwork. I’ve left a playing card on each one for the photo to help with contrast. Any idea why these are spaced the way they are?

I'd think that this is to allow display of trinkets?
I don't think this is for anything else than aesthetics. Should be fine to flatten imo.

That’s what I was thinking. I wish they would have left me some bricks for a mantle.
