It looks more like an ash hoe than a coal rake but would stop short of calling it the ugliest.
 
It's the sort of tool I would probably make myself for pulling coals forward, so I wouldn't call it ugly, just home made :)
 
The ugliest ever? doesn't beat watching my mother in law messing with her stove. People can be tools, right?

Sounds like Mad Tom's mother in law. Ba dum bum. Maybe I should post a close up of the weld job--promise you, ugliest EVER. Super useful though.

I disagree that tool is a thing of beauty! You can send it my way anytime you're tired of looking at it.. I would give it a coat of flat black high temp paint though.. Nice and well designed tool!

Cut the handle off an old garden hoe and you'll basically have the same thing.

Easy!, You just have to bend over,,, or,,,, you could do it Dennis's way and use a milk crate to rake them from a more comfortable sitting position.
 
Here's my rake, I made it out of an old ash shovel that I didn't like and never used, so the handle matches my poker.

We use hoes for hoeing. We use rakes for raking.
