last year had an man who worked told me his dad used sassafras wood to keep his chimney and stove clean , well i tried it last year about every couple of weeks , stove and pipes stayed clean all winter ,had a nephew who also tried it he believed it keep his pipes cleaner

so maybe a few of you can try this this winter and report along on what you think work or not i am cutting and storing a skid full separate from rest of wood

But then I burned a lot of soft maple and white ash in our stove last winter and got the same results. Some have even burned potato peelings or aluminum cans with good results. For best results though, you can not beat good dry wood.

We do have several sassafras on our place and I love to cut them just for the odor. Sweet smelling stuff it is.

I've got garlic on right now. It's also good for keeping away the North American Elephant, and the elusive Big Foot.


Burn dry wood, and no moisture can build up creosote in the chimney.

I think this theory has to do with dry wood also. I split about a cord of Sass. in the spring and left it sit in a heap all summer, just stacked it, and this stuff is all under 20% It almost feels like Balsa Wood!

Apparently, from my experience, sipping a nice young scotch while watching the fire accomplishes the same result.

I toss a live ferret into each of our stoves over a nice hot bed of coals about once a month or so during the burning season, and I find that our flues stay nice and clean. Rick

I've read that kind nurturing words whispered into your chimney will also stave off creosote build up

A guy I Know said to burn salt to dry creasote ,but I don't have a problem with creasote and am not going to put somthing corrosive like salt in a metal device.

I have tons of Sassafrass and it is my least liked wood to burn as it is so light. It is nice if you like the popping sound. It does burn hot, so that may be your theory of helping your chimney. It does make you feel like a hee man when splitting. It has to be the easiest wood to split ever.

We have a out house at the farm and when its really cold out and I get up in the middle of the nite to get rid of excess Vodka and OJ I'll pee in the ash bucket rather than go outside. But it wakes you up when there are coals in there
