Hard or Sugar Maple.

Todd I would say you won, just to make sure when the leaves come out I'll post another picture.

These leaves are right under the tree pictured.

The leaves clinch it as Sugar maple, but the location also works against Silver Maple. Around here (central PA, and even more so in northern NY where Zapny is) it is pretty unusual to find Silver Maple in the middle of the forest or on hill like Zapny's woods. I think in the midwest or close to the coast Silver Maple is more widespread. In the mountains it is common only along rivers or where someone planted it.

I'm not saying it is........but that bark looks a bit like White Oak.

Sugar Maple hands down and by the looks of the background would mae a nice sugarbush

Man......How did I miss an easy ID like that....I gotta hit these posts more often.
I force myself to ID with no leaves, it helps you to become one with the bark, Sugar Maple is a hole in one.

I have two Tree ID quick reference books that are about 4"x6" in size and take you step by step through identification. One is for winter identification (leaf off)and one is for summer (leaf on). They are by May Theilgaard Watts/Tom Watts. I got them in college taking some course I do not remember but they are by far the easiest way to identify trees in the NE that is..I gighly recomend them. You can get them at Amazon.com for $3.95each and I carry them in my atv when I am in the woods

I think all you guys have missed this one. It's Shagbark Hickory. A very common tree here in the rural South and very desirable. There is no finer wood than Shagbark Hickory. David

Once in a while I see a Sugar Maple or White Oak that is shaggy enough to look almost like Shagbark Hickory. I'm not saying the picture is one of them, but it is sort of a shaggy Sugar Maple.

Here are links to the two books:

Winter Tree ID
Tree ID

These look good and are inexpensive, so I think I'll get one or borh of them.
Thanks for the suggestion.
