Hello. I have a traditional masonry fireplace, about 12 years old. The throat flue damper has never done a great job of keeping cold air out of my home. I suppose what needs to be installed is a spring damper at the top of the chimney but I don’t really want to spend that kind of money right now.
Instead, wondering if I can attach a roll of high-temp self-sticking gasket on the lip of the damper to enhance the seal. Is that something that is done or is it a bad idea? If recommended, any suggestions on the brand? There seems to be a lot of options on Amazon etc. Thanks in advance for any advice.

If the fireplace is on an outside wall, a better seal might be safely acheived by creating an insulated plug (door) for the front.
