So an Assplunk rep stopped at my house to ask permission to travel over my land, the town wants trees and branches cut away from the lines. The lines run from the street into the woods over my land. I asked the guy if I could keep the wood. He told me that they don't take it so whatever comes down is mine. Hopefully they will cut some good stuff for me. I also pointed out to "problem" trees that they could cut. I will have to see what I score!

You do realize that, while they are there they will:

1)Throw vine seeds about so as to kill the young saplings that are not killed by
2)the chemicals they will spray around the stuff too small to saw
3)they will 'burn one' (or two or three) cause that's the guys that work for AssPlunk
4)they may be spending some private time with a local underage gal while on your property also

but the good news is, they will leave wood strewn all over for you to go scrounge.

Check your copy of the easement to see what they can and cannot do.

Our utility company cuts all wood in the easement to fireplace length and stacks all nice and neat wherever it is cut. They chip and haul away the trash cuttings. The unspoken rule around here is that if the wood is stack on your property, or along the road or fence bordering your property, the wood is yours. However.... some people leave it out there and never touch it. I'm tempted to knock on some doors and offer to take that eyesore stack of wood away.

National Grid had some hired guns cut 'danger' trees down here a few years ago. Stuff on the lawn they cleaned up...along the right of way they left the logs minus the branches. The branches they collected off to the side of the right a way. They had a gentleman stop by and work out a written agreement...no complaints here. Hey they have a right of way after all. When it was all done we probably got a season and a half of ash splits out of it.

All in all it was a plus plus for us cause they cut down a few trees I was worried about but they didn't fit their profile of a danger tree. They made an expensive accommodation on our behalf...both trees required a bucket truck or cherry picker...what ever you call it.

Shari, you are probably right about a couple of those.

Since our utility company stopped doing the work and has farmed that job out they have been on our place twice to clear the lines. The first time they told me they were going to spray after all the trimming was done but that got thrown out. I think too many people must have complained. Folks are getting touchy about the spraying.

Funny, every time they cut I'll see them taking breaks and also have a fire going. That's okay though.

Also I don't worry about anyone taking wood because the power lines are not near the road so nobody could even see them.

The lines they are gonna clear are one private property as soon as they leave the road, but when we had the ice storm that knocked down all the trees, people with saws and pick-up trucks came from all corners of the earth to take wood. Didn't matter, private property or not, they came. I almost had to get a bit rowdy with some guys who trespassed on land next to me taking a big Oak, but decided is wasn't worth it for a tree or land that wasn't mine!

Seems like the first, easy step to take to protect your wood is to post your land. Put up No Trespassing signs and write NO FIREWOOD COLLECTING on them. At leat that way nobody can claim they didn't know

All I gotta do is tell my girlfriend that if they steal the wood,we will have to buy some and then we will have less money for decorations and curtains. That would get her to keep a sharp look out!
