Needs to be replaced. Mine seems to have softened too but it could be just another cat getting near its end of life.

Springs were at one time external. Those are no longer available or calibrated.
The thermostats with internal springs can only be properly calibrated on a jig at the factory.

Thaniks BKVP, mine is external. It still works some, after all the stove have been used every year for the last 40 plus years. Good stove and still a good stove.
