Found a guy wanting to get logs (pickup truck length, not huge) off his property and he's willing to drop them at my house. Has a mix of oak and maple, all downed within the last month or so. I asked for more maple, less oak, as I've got some good unseasoned/1 year oak already and am more concerned about 2012-2013 right now...he quoted $100 delivered for around 2 cords.
Seems a reasonable deal to me...I don't have a truck/trailer (have SUV) yet so getting log length scrounges are hard. He's going to bring 3 pickup truck loads full to me.
This weekend DH and I are working on a couple of downed trees in the neighbor's land, and strategizing how to get the cut up and downed tree from the bottom of a steep ravine on our own land (!? must have gone down and been "cleaned up" before we bought the house in the bad Fall storms...then dumped over the edge instead of stacked or given away to a scrounger). I found the wood when I climbed up from the bottom to check out a large sized branch...that turned out to be covering a whole pile of logs. D'oh! It will be fun because it's too steep to work from above, but if we work it from below it's like playing pickup sticks on the downhill side of some pretty heavy logs...move the wrong one and we're squashed...good times.
And saving the best for last...DH found someone through work who's selling her parents' house, and the parents have about 2 cords of split and stacked, 3-5 year old wood that they just want out before the house lists. He has been bringing home Subaru Forester sized loads and this stuff is primo...yum. Blazes right up and gives good heat - I finally know what real seasoned wood is!
Wood is our new obsession - y'all knew that was going to happen, didn't you?
