Have you found anything or device to be the simplest / best tie down? Ratchet strap, rope with a knot, chain, whatever. I bought one of these Hitt "cargo constrictors" and never did figure out how to make it work, just baffled heck out of me, maybe it's defective, lol -- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MHHZUHM/?tag=hearthamazon-20

If you haul something regularly, such as a 4-wheeler or whatever, do you have custom made straps/ropes/chains for it?

My brother favors rope and a good knot.
 
these are my favorites. We have some 6' ones some 1" 10' ones and some 2" 10' ones all hold up well and the self wrapping is great. I have tried similar cheaper ones from lowes ect but the erickson ones are the only ones that hold up.

I have had very good luck with ratchet straps like those above.
 
cordellette, clove hitch, and a carabiner...
