Food for thought. Which has a higher temperature of smoke going up the chimney after 5'? Rank them, highest to lowest.
A) Open fireplace, burning unseasoned, unsplit wood.
B) Same fireplace situation with glass front closed, using just bottom draft slot.
C) Coal insert, with proper draft adustment, insulated flue liner to 5'
All in full, normal burn process.
We all know the diferences in temperature of the fuels but remember the conditions.
Let the responses begin.

I would assume that teh coal insert would have the coolest exhaust temps. Then the fireplaces would probably be about the same.
