Hello, this stove came with the house I bought. Any info on it? Sweet Home Alpine AFX (tested date of 12/16/1985). Seems to be in good shape, minus some fire brick deterioration, and some surface rust. What’s recommended black polish or high temp paint after sanding off the rust spots.

Steel wool the exterior, blow off all dust, then wipe down with alcohol. Paint in a very well ventilated area with a good stove paint like Stove Brite Satin black. It will take 2 cans to give the whole stove 3 light coats.

Is it easy to remove piping and take outside to paint? Does the imperial black polish paste not work well?

Yes, it's a good idea to do this outdoors on a calm day or in an open garage as long as it's over 50º.

Don't use stove polish. This is a painted stove. If you use stove polish, it will be faded grey again within one season and it will be quite hard to paint because the waxy buildup of the polish will need a serious sanding to remove.
