Supreme surround AND face?

New to this who game, and just trying to understand.... Currently looking at a Supreme Lumis to fit into my existing 40*30*24 opening. When buying, the site is telling me that a face is optional and the surround is necessary.

Please help me understand the difference and do I need the surround? I believe I need the face as the unit I'm looking at is smaller than the opening.

A surround (faceplate overlay) will probably be needed unless the fireplace is an exact fit. This is unlikely. Measure up the fireplace to be sure this insert will fit, including depth, top and bottom. If the fit is confirmed, then check how well the opening will be covered by the faceplate. If the faceplate leaves gaps at the sides or at the top, then the optional faceplate overlay will be required to cover those gaps.

Sorry, still confused. Are you eluding that the "surround" and the "face" are actually one in the same? The unit would fit with plenty of clearance, I would need the face to cover the gaps.
