I bought a Shindaiwa 415 25 years ago after a buddy and the dealer
convinced me it was the best saw made, and I still believe it. I have
cleared my house site and long driveway, and cut all my firewood for
those 25 years, and done nothing to the saw except replace the chain
clutch once and some rubber bushings after I dropped a tree on it.
However, recently, the little fuel pickup line broke; dunno how common
this is to other saws, but it's a piece of rubber hose about 4" long that
plugs into a grommet-like fitting in the top of the fuel tank and dangles
in the fuel, with a filter at the end. Apparently when it broke, the carb
got clogged - it's never been cleaned or rebuilt - so the saw starts and
runs but dies when you put a load on it. I had a new fuel pickup line
and installed it, but of course the carb was already clogged.
The carb is no problem, it's a generic Walbro unit, easy to find parts.
But the mechanic says the new fuel pickup line which I installed has
already broken, and that he's had tons of trouble with bad new units
that apparently aged and became brittle on the shelf. Apparently
he can't find a substitute part and he claims it's not possible to jury-rig
something, which surprises me. He's getting another Shindaiwa part
and crossing fingers that it is good.
Has anyone run into this problem and figured a way to jury-rig it or a
good substitute part ?
