Hey all,

I have a small 12ftx32 ft cabin in Upstate NY. It has very high ceilings (11ft) and one part of it has an uninsulated floor and the walls are just 2x4 so again.. not very good insulation. It has many windows as well...My current stove is 14yr old. A discontinued englander 17 vl. It is small 20" wide by 30 inch tall by 12" deep. 44k btu rating and it is supposed to heat 500-1200 sqft. From when we get to the cabin, and it is frozen at 5f to 10f, by the time the cabin feels warm... it take about 5-6 hours. We are never able to make the place super hot but it is indeed comfortable after half a day of cranking out heat. So although the space is small - I need a regular size stove.

I can barely get it to burn for 5 hours (rated for 6). So it cannot sustain us at night when it is very cold. This hadn't been an issue since we didn't really use cabin at the dead of winter but started to this year and I hate waking up to feed it...

This was a cheap stove off Lowe's years ago.

I am trying to see if I can spend more and get a better stove that will last a min of 10 hours (easily) to 12hours.. Obviously the more the better but really hoping for a min of 10-11 hours without any special stuff.

Any recommendations?

Look for something with at least a 2 cu ft firebox. If I pack my Kuma (1.8 cu ft) tight on hot coals I can get 9 or 10 but not much more than that and the coals are meager. If you are looking for something that can be rode a little harder in the early stages to thaw out the cabin I would try for a steel stove. Larger Kuma, Pacific energy, Drolet, Buck, would be good options.

What is the current chimney? That may limit choices.

Any consideration given to running a vented LP, wall mounted furnace? They flat out work.
Can you access the uninsulated floor to fix the insulation issue?

We spent years trying to bring a cabin in N.Mn up to speed with only an old VC stove all winter long. Brutal. Gaaaawwwwd. How did we survive that.......

I'd look into a LP wall heater to help get the temp up fast and let it fill in when the stove runs low.

On the other hand. You simply need a bigger stove (as mentioned). Research the Drolet offerings perhaps.

Wisco - 6" chimney through the wall. I will buy 10 hours.. that is fine. I will look up 2 cu stove and pricing.

moresnow - Issue with LP is just that I will need to handle refilling. I have a two 30lbs tanks and per my estimate I will need to refill almost every other time or evetime I go. So.. a pain as well. Looking into pellets now actually.

Sounds like a plan. Another note, have some pine or other fast burning softwoods handy. They do a good job heating things up fast.

You're the ideal person for a simple quick heating steel stove, I'd look at a 2-2.5 cuft stove, Quadrafire, Pacific Energy, Regency a stove that will get up and go quick, with some horsepower for heat. Easy to operate, great heaters... Try and stay warm.

Before I lived here I used to come out here @-30c and try and warm this place up with this old beast.i could only get about 4 hours burn time.when I went to buy a new stove the Mrs said I like that stove it's got character, my response was character doesn't get up twice a night to feed it.

If the goal is inexpensive, it's hard to beat Drolets. The Deco Nano will provide more capacity 2 ways. Its firebox is about 50% larger and it loads N/S which allows full loading without concern of the wood falling against the glass.
