Speeco 36 ton??

So this guy on craigslist has what he is calling a 36 ton splitter for sale for $1000, was at $1150 yeaterday. So i email him and ask who makes the splitter and what model Honda engine it is

He comes back with it is a SpeeCo with a 8 horse Honda Gx240 engine, bought splitter in Jan 2009 and is in great shape, so I do a little research and do not see any 36 ton units from speedo, but see a 25 , 28 and 34 ton models from speeCo that use a 8 horse Honda here

I offer him $800 and he stay's firm at $1k or $800 and some type of trade, I say I have no trade but keep me in mind at $800. He came back with if dont sell by Monday night he will sell it to me at $800

Anybody using SpeeCo here? any thought on if this is a good deal or not? Here is his C/L link

I have one of the 34 ton models but it does not have a Honda. No complaints except that I need to add a tray to catch the splits as they fall. It has never been stopped by a piece of wood in 5 years of splitting.

Never had a problem with the flat beam. I split up to 20" diameter. The toughest test has been red elm and it did very well. Not going to split crotch pieces of stringy elm, but I just noodle those with a chainsaw. Oak, hickory, ash, cherry is what I usually split with no issues. It has a fast cycle time and is light enough I can drag it around my yard by hand.

No problems with the chicom engine either. Believe it is a Loncin.

My 22 ton does not have a flat beam, its sort of a cradle affair and works well.

My 20 ton has been stopped on exactly one piece of gnarly elm. Just guessing, I'd say we have split about 25 full cord of elm. Well over 100 cord total. I may have got that piece to split but it just was not worth it to mess with it. Either it split now or goes onto the brush pile. Although on a couple of trees I expected to throw several away, the splitter did just fine. So one does not necessarily need that high tonnage to do the splitting.
