Here's a new test for the condition of wood. This afternoon I was bringing in some White Ash splits and dropped one about a foot onto the small stack, the alarm chime (Glass breakage sensor) went off. Now that's some dry/seasoned wood!
 
Or you could drop it on your foot. If it hurts, it is probably seasoned. If you dance for 10 minutes, it is still green.
