Many birds migrate at night and the city lights disorient them. A few cities are running a lights out campaign (broken link removed to http://www.citywildlife.org/lightsout.html)

Nice pic. I always thought them to be odd looking for a woodland bird. I thought they were smaller too.

What kinda bird is it?

Its a timber doodle !

Yep on the "Timberdoodle" I have a friend that has a vizsla registered to do the banding it is a hoot. We get a lot of them while grouse hunting very stinky little birds. My gsp's will point but not retrieve wc's. A lot of dogs won't retrieve them. Very dark meat (migratory) taste a little like liver. More common name is woodcock.
