Silicone tape smell

Hello all. We run a Pleasant Hearth PH35PS in our house during the winter. After cleaning this year, we noticed a smoke leak coming from one of the vent pipes. After weeks of going insane trying to locate the leak, we finally found it on the 45 degree angle pipe we have. After some googling, that is pretty much always expected to happen eventually with those angled pipes.

I had read that the best type of sealant for a leak like that is silicone tape. I used Sharkbite self-fusing silicone tape from Lowes and wrapped it nice and tight around the entire 45 degree angle pipe to prevent any future leaks. The smoke leak is gone. However, now when I run it, the tape smells awful! The tape is rated for continuous use of 500 degrees F and I've temped my pipes quite a few times and it's never been over 250-260ish, so I don't believe it's melting or anything.

I've read that there is an expected burn off smell from using rtv silicone sealant but I can't find any similar information on this kind of tape. Is this smell expected? Will it burn off after a few days use? Or did I maybe use too much when wrapping the entire 45 degree angle pipe? I can always remove some of the tape but if the smell is going to wear off in a few days, I would rather not. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or has used this brand of tape with success before.

Thanks!

Reminds me, I need to get some more, for several uses.

One thing about it is that it does "self fuse" to itself, it doesn't peel off like electrical tape, etc. You'll swear it's molded one piece.
