I just put. lengthy post in the Simpson Captstan Winch - 1st use thread about using a self-releasing snatch block when winching out logs, along with a couple links to short videos of them in use. Some of you might find that discussion interesting.
I own two self-releasing snatch blocks and have found them to be a great time-saver when pulling logs out of the woods with the 3 point hitch logging winch on my tractor. I can;t always set up for a straight-line pull in my woods. The ability to winch logs around a corner and not have to stop halfway through each pull to walk out and release the block has been really handy. The biggest drawback to them is the cost: they typically sell for between $350 and $400.
I did just stumble across what appears to be a solid self-releasing snatch block sold by Woodland Mills. They had them listed at $215, but are currently marked down to $195. At that price, if I did not already own two of them, I'd be jumping on one.
