Sealing an ash pit?
Hi all — I have an older home that has an ash cleaning pit in the finished basement. There is a plastic cover on the drywall, then six inches to the cinder blocks of the foundation, then the pit is behind there.
We DO actively use the wood burning fireplace, but do not use the ash trap at all. We use the fireplace maybe 30 nights a year.
We are considering having some book cases built into the wall where the door to the trap is, which would make access to it quite difficult.
So I’m thinking it’s best that if we are sealing off access to the trap from the basement, we probably need to seal it off up top, too.
Is there any way I can seal the trap from the floor of the fireplace to render the trap useless? It sounds like I could use silicone, a piece of steel, etc., but just curious how foolproof these options (or others) might be, or if this is a total no-go.
