Woke up to some carnage this morning. One big old walnut, about 24" DBH and maybe 70 feet tall down in the back yard. Did not go down for a closer look (still blowing and wet), but looks like maybe it broke off at the root line. Saw another 18" walnut uprooted and leaning against the one next to it. Hopefully I can save one of those. Two other 12" walnuts are also partly uprooted, and leaning.
The small ones are not so upsetting, but it's a damn shame to see that big old tree come down.
One neighbor had a tree that would cover most of a football field come down. A small ranch house, and the tree was only 30 - 40 feet from the house. Luckily it fell the other way, or there would be a few more obituaries in this week's papers. I'm going to ask him if I can help him make it go away.
