You know what was going through my mind. The very day after being at the Stihlership, I happened upon this Red Oak
[Hearth.com] Runs like crap . . . Jay or Southbound or just a good tweaker?

The 440 has always been somewhat cantakerous about starting and/or idling. Yesterday though, when I was finishing up these uglies, there were a couple times it wouldn't rev up. Not like a bound chain ( or chain brake). It would rev some but not all the way. Then other times it would.

Anywho . . . I'm headed back to get a couple loads today. I'm tempted to dump my mix and start a fresh. I used HD Echo mix oil, 87 Octane, and some of that blue Star Tron (for ethanol).

Sounds like a fuel filter starting to get bad. Also a simple one that your probally doing but make sure your switch to the winter setting on the air breather.

:red: didn't know there was one . . . :red:

OK under the the air filter cover there will be a black plastic piece that slides in and out with two locations in can go in take a look and snap a pic. its an easyone! The air coming in is to cold. Should start a little easier too! lol you may not want that 660 after today....lol

With the ChillLEE I got brewin, there is gonna be a lotta' bad gas around here :grrr:

Pulled the air cover (2nd time in itsa life :red: ) and I no see the adjustment.

Damn straight I'da liketa' have that 660 for these backbreakers
Three wide in a bucket load and my back can't get a second row :bug:

At what temp does it become an advantage to switch to the winter setting? I believe my MS390 has such a setting but I've never messed with it since I'm rarely cutting even in 30s.

Once less than 30 degrees is the norm I switch (winter). Once 50's+ is the norm I switch back! Being in Texas you should be fine...

I park everything related to wood at 50

lol I knew that you cut when its time to burn....

Its a black rectangle piece of plastic that just slides in and out of the slot. There is two place's it can go. One pulls the warm air off the motor and pre warms it Winter.
The other slot is to pull fresh air "summer". Sure could be bad gas or fuel filter all an easy fix. My money on the Air just because you say it never runs quite right and your always cutting in Cold.

I would check the fuel filter, plug see how they look and fresh high test mix is always good....

If we all could only pic one thing and throw 10.00 each in a hat...Bet we all would get are money back..lol he's got a couple issue's and getting worse. (cheep though)

And tune it afterwards!

I am now a believer in Sea Foam. My 390 was starting to act up and loosing some power. I was ready to adjust the carb and tried some Sea Foam in the tank. It cleaned it right up and have not had a problem since. I have put a little in my Gas Can and in the ATV, etc. It is a cheap fix. I cannot remmeber who was the big believer on this site but it got me to try it and I like it. Put some right in the tank if you are having problems to get it cleaned out. Then put some in the gas can for future cleaning. It goes along way with small engines.

Seafoam is near-miracle stuff. Another one I like is called Fuel Power but you have to order it direct.
It's funny to go to a moto shop and here the mechanics telling customer after customer "put some Seafoam in it".

One tank of seafoam stright-up "icdeadbtu" then we call you a tweaker2...

I don't like sea foam...

Ran it in my tbird once and swapped engines shortly after... Then about the same results in a explorer my dad had...

Ok so I'm hard headed and the tranny in the bird is acting up so folks tell to use the sea foam for trannys.... I now have a new tranny waiting to go in....

I learned my lesson on snake oil.........

True story . . .I swear . . .

{Many} years ago I turn wrenches to put food on the table. We didn't eat so good, but we didn't go hungry. Anywho . . . guy comes in that leases a Fiesta. 4-year lease, up in three months. Brags how he has never changed the oil. Hey, it's not his car! A month later, we put an engine in it, then he turned in the lease.

"You can pay me now, or you can pay me later".

Anyone know what's in 'SeaFoam'?

Funny!!!!

All my work trucks are chevy.. Parts are cheap and I don't care to bang them up.. Now if they were fords I would spend all my time polishing them....

O and for the chevy I have to keep parts tucks on hand.. Makes all the repairs cheaper....

Sounds like fuel starvation... there are several ways that this can happen, so I'm going to say the little screen in the carb is plugged up because I've seen that a lot.

I like seafoam.... run it in the 9.9 merc a few tanks a year maybe more. When seafoam is not in it stabil is.. I put this in all my small engines...

some people love the stuff some don't...

I think the worse thing you can do is use it after you have a major problem and expect it to clear something up. Some swear it works then too.
