Replaced Big E convection blower motor with Dayton motor- LOUD

We have a Breckwell Big E. A few days ago our convection blower went out. According to what we could find, Fasco no longer makes the blower motor. We cross referenced it at Grainger and got a Dayton 3M548 blower motor. Great price $55 including tax.however.....it sounds as if its run with a jet plane engine now! Its SO incredibly loud. It blows much harder than the fasco motor also. Any reason why the Dayton motor is so loud? Here are the specs if it helps. Also is the loudness just an inconvience or a sign that we need a different motor?

Without seeing the wiring diagram on the motor, there might be a lower "tap" you set to motor to. If the motor had additional wires, look at the diagram and see if there is a High, Medium, and Low setting based on what wire you have connected. Another thing to check is make absolutely sure you have the blower on correctly. You are saying it blows much harder than before, so it sounds like you have it on right, but double check that. 3000 RPM sounds a bit high for a blower motor, but I don't know the specs on the Big E.

Strange that your blower would use a 1/15 HP at 3000 rpm 2.2 amps 5/16 shaft when my Harman uses a 1/70 @1550 .65amps with a 1/4"shaft. And yours uses 4 times the amount of juice than mine. Something doesn`t sound right to me.
However, If in fact you have the correct cross replacement there is still no valid reason for it to be significantly louder. The noise is probably not from the motor itself but could very well be from the impeller not being true. Any out of balance (wobble) in the impeller is going to have a noticeable effect with regards to vibration/noise.
 
The shaft, volts, hz, rpms are all exactly the same as the Fasco motor. We compared those specs on each motor.Not sure on the hp as its not stated on the Fasco motor to compare to. No other wires or speeds to hook to on the motor. When I say loud I don't mean it sounds like its vibrating it just sounds like the motor is a lot larger and more powerful. Does anyone have any ideas on what motors are routinely used to replace the Fasco

OK, compare the amperage draw of the old/new motors. If it matches it would tell you the HP on these small motors are pretty much the same .
Other things to check is that the impeller is in the correct position on the shaft. The further away from the motor housing the more potential for wobble/noise.
You also might want to remove the impeller and compare noise with and without it to see if it`s the motor itself or the impeller thats causing the noise.
Maybe a thin high temp gasket mat`l of a sort between the fan and stove body would help quiet it down?
Personally I`m not thrilled with the noise from my Harman blower either but I live with it. There`s just not a lot of options available with this issue.

I have been replacing the newer breckwell blowers C-E-033 with grainger #1TDR6

I also have changed a few of the older breckwell B45227 blowers with grainger #1TDR3

I haven't had any issues and they seem to be just a quite as the stock blowers. No complaints anyway!

The original Breckwell Big E motor was 3000 RPM? Sounds high. The most I've seen on room blower motors for pellet stoves has been 1500 RPM.
 
Since this is our first year with this stove (just moved here in Sept.) I wonder if the blower was already on its way out and it possibly was not blowing as well as it should have when we first started using it? I've heard the Big E's are a bit loud and we never really thought this one was loud at all...until now. This old house doesn't have much insulation so the fact that it blows harder is actually probably a good thing since its on one end a house without a very open floor plan. I think we are just going to have to live with turning the tv up louder! Like I said its not a bad sound..its just a more powerful sound a bit like if we are using a shop type floor fan in the summer. Thanks for the help! We have a guy who sells and services these that we are going to talk to tonight to double check. Unfortunately we didn't know about him before we started this endeavor.
 
Hi, I did the same exchange on my p2000i, ( P-E-033 for a dayton 3m548), a week ago, and the motor its self doesn't make noise, it's the noise of the much higher air velocity. The dayton is a better mptor and has tougher windings, but is a higher energy draw, nearly an amp. the design is also different.. no internal fan, but the end is open and the blower fan seems to blow through the motor cooling it, I also put a big wad of fiberglass between the burn enclosure and the motor with a 4x4 piece of sheet metal that I corrugated against the motor. The motor runs quiet and cool and I use my stove to heat so the higher out-put is a plus. The higher cfm also keeps the stove cooler putting that heat into the room. Dump the Fasco specialty motor for the Dayon. Grainger is where I got mine, but they have the wrong picture, as does most sites, it really looks like this one, ((broken link removed)) , The shaft is 1/2 an inch longer but presents no problems. Bob..yes that totally helps. Your description is exactly how our fan sounds...its the force of the air not a motor sound. Glad to know its working for you. So we'll just turn the tv up louder...use it as an excuse to put in surround sound and look forward to spring! Thanks!
 
OK, it looks like the Big E has one big mother of a blower, (compared to mine).
2.5 amps by design is a bit much IMO as it amounts to just shy of $1.20a day @ $.19per KWHR (delivered) where I am. That`s $36 a month just for the blower fan. You have to add the auger and combustion fan to that. But if that`s what it takes there`s no options.
This might be something the stove designers could improve upon.
 
I have a P-24 in the front room and a Big E in the office of my house. The Big E is very loud and the P-24 is not as loud. So one day I switched the blowers and guess what, there was no change in sound. The Big E has something to the design that makes the entire big ugly box louder.

I think you owe all BIG E owners an apology for calling their stoves" BIG UGLY BOX" lol .
 
Actually I like the simple functional lines of the Big E.
I once before commented on how I feel my Harman resembled a toilet bowl with the hopper looking just like a toilet tank.
 
My Big E (2005) sounds like a hi powered shop vac. Hard to hear the TV. Puts out a huge amount of heat, though.
