Western Washington
3.5 years ago I removed our chimney pipe when I redid our roof, since then it has been laying on its side, outside, uncovered, and in the elements. We live in western Washington so lots of rain. I am now in the process of setting up our stove and am hoping I can still use this chimney. It’s two sections of Selkirk 6” chimney pipe. I now have it under cover and am in the process of cleaning them. No visible damage inside or out, they just look dirty. Is it safe to reuse these?

It's hard to tell. This is the old, seamed style Selkirk. If water has gotten into the insulation via the top, locking slits or the seams, then it has been compromised.

That’s what I was worried about. I imagine there is no way to tell either. Are the old and new chimney pipes compatible? If I buy new pipe will it connect to the elbow that stayed dry in the attic?

Maybe, but Selkirk makes many pipes so I am not sure which is the correct fit. Metalbestos Ultra-Temp? It's best to ask Selkirk support.

I just weighed them and they each way 30 lbs. Looking online I think they are only supposed to be 20 lbs. On top of that, when I flip them over I can hear the insulation slide from one end to another which doesn’t seem right. Playing it safe and buying new pipe. Thankfully a store in town has it in stock so I can take my elbow and make sure they are compatible. Thank you for your insight!
