I plan on building a tile heat shield with Durock and non-combustible spacers for proper airflow. My question is has any one installed sheet metal behind the durock (drywall/non-combustible spacers/sheet metal/durock/tile) in order to further reduce clearance between wall and stove? It’s mainly for looks as I would like to avoid putting sheet metal on top of the tile. Thanks.

As described, the metal is not needed. There is no additional clearance gained by adding it. The tiled cement board on 1" spacers suffices for the maximum reduction to 12" as long as the shield is open on bottom and top by at least an inch to permit the free convection of air behind it.

YEP !

Once upon a time you could purchase a metal rack with built-in metal dividers to pop in your own ceramic tiles you purchased anywhere and be placed behind the stove as a heat shield, was approx. 4 ft x 5ft or something like that, it was a brilliant idea and product however not sure it is still on the market. It would stand about 2'' of the floor and 1'' or more from the wall with open top.
