Inside the firebox of my Regency I2450 there are 5 tubes like the attached picture.

What is their purpose?

Should the holes on each tube point to any specific direction?

Thanks

[Hearth.com] Purpose of Airtubes Inside Firebox

Their purpose is to provide preheated secondary air. With that air, half-combusted gases from the primary fire (fed by primary air that comes in presumably through an airwash and maybe elsewhere too), are further combusted. This cleans up the exhaust ("it burns smoke") and creates more heat - so a benefit to you (more BTUs out of the same wood) and to the great outdoors (less particulate emissions).

Normally they are pointed at a slight downward angle to the front of the firebox.
