Please suggest a stove...

We're looking to put in a second wood stove. There are some tough parameters though. The height of the firebox in the fireplace that it would be installed in front of is only 25" high. There is a slate floor in front of it and a large brick surround for the existing fireplace. Is there a short enough stove that will do aprox 2000 square feet (+ or -) with a relatively large firebox/long burn time? Good looking would be nice too.

Need all the dimensions of the firebox -how wide? how deep? how wide at the back? Is there raised hearth in front of the slate? if so how far out does it extend? ... and where will the stove sit in relation to these measurements?

Width at front = 32"
Depth = 16"
Width at back = 28"
Not a raised hearth, stone extends about 36" from brick face.
The stove would sit in front of the firebox - on the slate. The slate can be extended if need be.

They make hearth legs for some stoves. Sounds like a Quadrafire Isle Royale, possibly with hearth legs is worth looking into.

The only decent size fire box stove I know of, that will exit to the rear and make it under you top of the opening is the VC resolute Acclaim The Encore is 26 5/8/" using a 6" flue collar and will not fit. Will it do 2000 sq ft? I doubt it will it carry the area? When the temp is above 20 possibly but what it can do id assist your primary system and reduce its times it would cycle

You could be right Elk. The Isle Royale has a 3 cu. ft. firebox and rear exits at 25" with the hearth legs, but that may be a tad too tight unless there is a way to gain at least a half inch for pipe slope. KarynAnne, do you have a picture of the fireplace you can post?

Begreen I was un aware the the Island Royal had hearth legs kit I looked at the manual and to the center of the rear exit pipe with hearth legs is 21.625 " add 3" for top anf you are 24.625" with probably enough space for some pitch

BTW a great looking stove and large firebox better suited for 2000 sq ft.

I'm with Begreen probably the match you are looking for, quality and pleasing looks

Elk's right on that. Also look at the Hearthstone Homestead. Not a big firebox but this is a second stove.

Another option is many coal stoves have a vent pipe that would meet that. Look at Harman Mark series.

A Hearthstone Homestead has a 2.0 cubic foot firebox and could probably fit in the opening you describe with 6 inch legs and certainly so with the 4 inch leg option. It's rated for up to 1,800 SF. I looked at one for a fireplace in my house but I am probably going to retool the hearth so I can fit my Phoenix in it.

I just got a Dovre Isle Royale, (before it was re-branded as a Quad) and I had quite a bit of trouble finding hearth legs for it and the only color I could have got was black and my stove is midnight blue. I would have had to order them from some shop in Washington state according to the local shop which sells Quadra-Fire. Evidently the current version of the Isle Royale has welded legs which are only in the standard size despite the manual online which says hearth legs are available, or so I was told. Maybe some of the dealers around here might know otherwise. MSG?

I was going to suggest the isle royale with hearth legs as well it's rated 2500 sf so it should be real good for 2000.

And it sounds like it would squeeze in there.

That stove was my second choice by a wisker due to a similar firebox entry height situation.

Most people that own those Isle Royales love them and I have never seen one used which I thinks indicates again that people are happy with them.

Base price is about 2375.00 w hearth legs.

I agree with BeGreen you should post a pic of the firebox for more thoughts/options to consider... and remember to measure 3 times from every angle before buying a stove... and ideally measure the stove on the showroom floor to be sure what you are imagining is whats really going on.

I sure hope these pics aren't huge. Many apologies if they end up that way and I'll try to fix them. This is my living room with vent free gas logs in use. (2 views) The gas line would be removed, and the slate on the floor is going to be extended for the stove. I'd love any feedback. Thanks.

Thanks! That's what you get when the guy in the house is a wildlife biologist/forester. I really like the room too, it's very masculine and cozy. (As an aside - my vocation is sitting next to the fireplace - one of my 4 spinning wheels.)

Thanks - they are only a couple of them. Most were harvested from the Eastern Shore of Maryland where my husband managed an 1100 acre piece of property on the Chesapeake Bay for close to 10 years. But he's been hunting since he was a boy, so there are a lot. He practices quality deer management and it shows. On that particular property he only permitted does only for 4 years to restore the balance of the herd before the first buck was allowed to be harvested. Even after that there were 50 - 60 does per year harvested and only about 3 - 5 bucks. He's the most ethical hunter that I know of, and he keeps us well fed.

our insert would fit, but its only a 1.3 firebox and 1500 sq ft rated, might be a better fit than ours out there. i'd look more to an insert than a freestanding unit , by the way its a beautiful room and hearth , im jealous
