My Appalachian 52 Bay insert has a small hole above the front door that is supposedly where I'm to insert a catalytic probe thermometer. To me this seems like it would allow me to read the temperature of the front side (the air intake side) of the combustor. But when I look at the probe manufacturer's installation instructions (see url below) it looks like they want the probe to read the back side temperature of the combustor. So should I use the factory hole and measure the front temp, or would it be way better to drill a probe hole in the stove behind the combustors to get the exit temperature? Would it be worth it to do all that?
