I bought 4 bags of pellets to try from Home Deopt the other day , which by the way came dome $50 a ton. I beleive they are Fireside brand, black and gold on the bag. I need to try another bag to verify, but when I went to clean the burn pot , it felt very gritty. Like there was sand on the burn pot. Anyone else have this experience?/

sure...its probably bits of fused silica....glass....caused by the salts content of the pellet. An elevated salt content will lower the fusion point of silica, which is in all pellets, to where it can actually fuse inside the stove....normally, its not hot enough for that.

Does this constitute a poor qualilty pellet??

not necessarily, just an elevated salt level, and now that you know it, you know to clean it out once a week or so (scrape the burnpot once a week, rake out the heavies as well).
