We are considering installing a pellet stove in our basement. We would have to exhaust through a wood frame wall with vinyl siding outside. Do I have to use a vertical pipe? I would like to keep it straight without a vertical pipe. If I do that how far out do I need to run it to keep the siding safe from melting and smoke

Depends on make and model of stove. Some require vertical venting most recommend it. Stove manuals will give you clearances for outside and inside venting. Check local area for pellet stove sales and then check the manuals of any stoves you are interested in. When running straight horizontal pipe if you lose power it is a good chance of smoke not venting out and filling your basement vertical pipe gives you a natural draft. Some stoves have battery back up to complete a shutdown during power outage. If you have a stand by generator that also works, lol.

A general rule of thumb would be 1 foot from siding but then again depends on stove.

You are putting this in your basement, right?
So you will need vertical to get it to the ground
as long as you follow manufacturer instructions you are good to go
Give us the stove name and model and it will be easier to answer your question
but yes straight out at ground level is OK as long as there is vertical to get to ground level
Vertical allows for some natural draft
