I say every winter when my heat pump freezes us and monthly power bills breaks us, that I want a wood heater. I’m afraid the insurance will frown upon something inside. I know the wood boilers are great and fantastic and all of that.but don’t think I can afford one. So what about an outdoor wood furnace? I’m heating about 3200 square feet. The hypertherm forced air furnace. I can probably have within 20’ from the house and enter through the basement. I can either tie into existing ductwork or cut in more registers. Thoughts and comments?

Most (mine was) insurance is fine with a wood stove as “supplemental” heat. I don’t see how you could save money by doing an outdoor boiler or furnace. A Drolet and heatpump upgrade if your system is 10+ years old is probably the best decision money wise.

Those outdoor forced hot air wood furnaces aren't great...most people don't keep them around long.
If your insurance has a problem with a stove or furnace inside, shop around a lil, it's not hard to find companies that are ok with it...mine charges $50 a year extra for the privilege, but since we have a built in stone fireplace, we are paying that no matter what. They just wanted pics of my setup, and to know the manufacturers clearance specs.
And just something to think about, beefing up your insulation and air sealing on the house pays you back 24/7/365.
