North Texas Wood Prices

Requesting thoughts on these wood prices here in North Texas DFW area. Of course there are the CL adds here as well. They all seem too expensive and nobody seems to know what a real cord is. All the mesurements are given as 4x8 or 4x16 but they still call it a cord. I've just listed two local dealers who have web sites.

Not sure about your area but if I could sell wood at those prices, I'd be in business fast! But that might be normal for that area.

a cord, is a cord, is a cord, is ahhh....128 cu/ft. Add in a moisture meter.

just ordered another 60,00lbs of tree length. $90 on a 5,000lb cord. All rock maple and beech.

1/2 cord of green oak for 260 bucks?. I have 3.5 cords of solid cherry for sale. Seasoned one year. First 2000 takes it.

He looks a little more promising. Think I'll give him a call. Otherwise I'll have to go way outside the metroplex for realistic pricing.

I only saw $310 for about 2/3 cord of seasoned oak - OUCH! Perhaps a Texas cord is REALLY BIG Cheers!

first thought on the first link is that I WANT 12-14" splits, but I will buy 24" for the same price and cut it down. I effectively get a 50% discount for setting up a 12" jig without the hassle of felling, bucking, or splitting. On to the topic - wow, expensive wood. I have not purchased firewood as we have more Post Oak and Blackjack Oak than we will ever need, but tose prices seem high for around here (but I do not live in the Metroplex area - more rural and westerly). Maybe I should supplement my Christmas budget by hauling a couple of trailer loads to DFW?

On highway 78N between Sachse and Wylie there are people set up in every vacant lot that is left. Maybe six or eight operations. They are selling criss cross stacks of wood, three feet high for around $40. There's maybe twenty or twenty five logs to a stack.

At the local gas stations there are bundles of wood sometimes wrapped in plastic sometimes not. Four logs each $7. One store has a sign out that says two for $8.

There is money too be made.

it would be nice, but like many of you, I don't think I could part with the wood. My wife gives me a hard time for the way I circle the stacks of wood as we leave the farm, or I "work" with them in view. good thought though on the supplemental income...

Assuming the pieces are cut 16", a full cord from the one guy listed would be 855.00 at 285.00 a face cord. Must not be much wood down in Texas.

I bought my firewood back in the heat of August. Mesquite, seasoned, split, delivered & stacked was $240 a cord........WELL....the seller's opinion of what a cord was....

They cut for the local resturants, so I thought they could be trusted. I asked about their prices, and told them I wanted a full two cords. He said, 'Yeah, Yeah, it's a full two cords, but we cut into 18" lengths." I said that's okay and we would just fill in the gaps between the two stacks. It ended up with trouble.... The truck and trailer came into the backyard spewing steam and the motor clinking and running after the key was turned off. We were 50ft from the firewood area, so I helped carry the Mesquite and stack it in 101+ degree heat. When they finished, they had stacked two rows 4' high, a total of 36" wide, and 16' long... What that means is that instead of 2 cords, it actually is just 1-1/2 cords.... Great Money for what work and wood they are selling.

The trouble came when I called them back and repeated our agreement and his words... Since I'd already paid them in cash, but took pictures with my little digital camera as they and I worked, and I told him that if he didn't bring out the missing 1/2 cord, I'd be calling the County Sheriff's Office....
The wood guy brought out and stacked the missing Mesquite and left...

Since August, I was given two whole fallen Pecan trees for the taking. I won't worry about wood next year as there will be 2-3/4 cords that should be dried by next winter.

Like President Regan said: "Trust but Verify."
