UNDATED – A new computer virus is reportedly found its way onto computers in the North Country and causing PC owners a lot of headaches. The new virus is called Reveton Ransomware. It locks up the screen with an FBI warning that says the user has been caught illegally downloading files. However, the user can regain control of the computer and avoid criminal charges if he/she pays a $200 fine through a link on the page. The fake FBI page looks very similar to the real FBI home page. Little information on the virus is available, but it has apparently gotten through anti-virus software such as Norton and McAfee and can be picked up by clicking on a compromised website or when downloading infected files. The FBI says users should not pay the bogus $200 fine and has recommended taking the computer to a specialist, then filing a report with their Internet Crime Division.
