Hi,

We had a JA Roby Polaris installed this past Summer.

Today, it was cold enough to fire it up for the first time.

Everything seems really great except that the smoke alarm keeps going off every 5 minutes.

I slowly built up the fire and slowly closed the bottom vent but still the smoke alarm keeps going off.

What should I do?

Is this normal first fire behavior?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

I saw in s previous post that I might need some extra ceramic fabric around the baffle but I don't know what that means or why smoke would be getting out.

OK. I'm in the room with the lights off. I'm looking for smoke with a high powered flash light and I can't see any smoke coming from anywhere around the stove.

There is a strong chemical smell in the room as if something was being burnt off.

I am not sure if this would br enough to set off the smoke alarm.

Please advise!

If this is the case I should have had the fire in the Summer so I could do this with the windows open!

You’re curing the paint and burning off any manufacturing oils. It’s normal. Each time you get it to a new hot point, you can get some curing. It’s not a bad idea to open a window to let the times out.

Thanks for the reply.

Would this burn off be enough to constantly set off the smoke alarm?

How long does it last?

I'm really regretting not doing this in the Summer as it's-8oC today!

It certainly could set off a smoke alarm. The oils will last until they are burnt off. You could get new paint curing smells each time you hit a new high. If you hit 400 today, you’re all cured up to 400. If you hit 500 tomorrow, you’ll have a little curing. Eventually you won’t have any more curing.

Get your curing done so you don’t have to worry about it anymore. -8 isn’t warm, but it’s not frigid either. (I guess that’s relative.). Get it done and start enjoying your stove!

OK. Well. I'm definitely going for max curing today.

This little unit is blasting out the heat, which is going up the stairs and straight out the window. In fact, I have multiple windows open...

It's actually overheating, so that's great news.

Also, watching it, with the glass front door window, I can't really see how the double burn or smoke burn is supposed to be happening but I'll take people's word for it.

No complaints.
