Juat bought a house and it has a timberline wood insert and inside the box is this curved metal shield...what does it do and is it in the right place...I'm not sure if it is supposed to go under the chimney hole to keep flame from going up the chimney or does it sit up front and act as a smoke shield any knowledge would be greatly appreciated Need some knowledge

Timberline was out of business before reburn was a thing in the commercial market. That could be a warped baffle or just a sheet of steel someone stuck in there to act as a crude baffle. Some stoves of that time did feature absolutely no baffle, so I could buy either explanation.

Either way, if you plan on heating with wood, start stove shopping now. You'll be a lot warmer with a modern stove (and your back will thank you).
