I am moving the Little Buck downstairs. What replacement should I get? The fireplace is wide and open on one side as well as on the front. Main limiting factor is 22.5" high opening. I would like a modern/clean looking stove/insert that can handle 20 inch logs . Is there anything affordable that I should be considering?

The Drolet Escape 1800-i is a popular insert that fits this criteria.

Minimum fireplace opening is about 23.5 inches though...any chance of grinding the top stones/metal about an inch taller?

The smaller model (Escape 1500) should fit fine, but log length is limited to 18"

Yes, you are correct, same for the Centruy 2900. It's a skosh too tall. If 18" wood is ok, then the True North TN20 insert will fit. It's 20 1/8" tall and 2cu ft capacity. PE Neo 2.5 insert is 21.5" tall and 2.5 cu ft.

I guess I will need to settle for 18 " max logs.
