I've had this stove for 10 years and loved it but never knew the inner workings of it, since my husband handled it. I got divorced and am having trouble solving this issue on my own, since I'm not really familiar with what modification was done...
In the past, My ex installed the optional remote heat duct. It didn't work well and seemed to be radiant heat that didn't really travel to the desired room at all (no fan with this kit).
This year I decided to burn wood again, but once up to temp, the stove surround and mantle felt extremely hot to the touch and smelled a bit like something was burning, even though the fan and thermo snap disc are working perfectly. It never did this before the remote duct was installed. Can I just remove the duct and use insulation and a piece of metal to cover the heat duct opening? If so, what materials are recommended? Will this fix the issue of the area above and around the stove getting so damn hot?
Thank you in advance!!

How far and what path does the remote heat duct take?
Does it terminate higher or lower than where it attaches to the stove.
Are you able to see what type of duct he attached?
Do you have a heat gun to see what temperatures you are reaching in the areas of concern?
A little more info will help to give a proper answer.
To remove the added duct, insulation shouldn't be needed. A tight fitting piece of metal would be suffient. My biggest concern would be that the wrong type of duct has been added.

Thank you for replying! I actually removed the duct already. It only went about 5 feet from the stove through the wall into the bedroom on the other side of the wall behind the stove. The metal piece was originally the square that was just punched out in the top of the stove. There was some insulation stuff removed as well. I can just cover with metal? It just feels like it will get crazy hot up there still in the cavity above the stove around the chimney

The fireplace can not be operated with the remote takeoff hole open. That is dangerous. It needs a proper cover with the insulation behind it . Otherwise, the type B remote duct needs to be reattached.

The cover is a knockout so a new cover would need to be fabricated. A square of 24 ga sheet metal the same size as the duct collar base would work and it can use the same screw holes as the removed collar base for attachment. The insulation would need to be high temp, probably mineral based but perhaps some kaowool (ceramic wool) would work. That's easier to obtain in small quantities.
