I just picked up this wood stove from an auction and noticed it does not have a UL tag or clearances tag. Does anyone know who made this stove? I don't want to list it with my insurance as a homemade stove since it is not homemade. The flue is 6" and the sides taper in to the rear about 1" on each side. The front is brass/bronze with a glass front. The previous owner put a shield on the rear but it has never been fired. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can not see the photos.

I don't know stoves much but I see no fire brick or baffle. Looks like somebody took a used stove, gutted it, cleaned it up and sprayed it with Pep Boys primer.

No idea because I am not an expert on stoves but I am a welder and although those welds will probably never give you a problem they certainly do not look like a very professional job? My guess is that it was home brew except fo the door.

It's odd looking in that it doesn't have any overhang at the front (top). Does the metal tag say anything on it? If it is 'home brew' then the door and the pedestal came from something else I think. I'm not ruling out that it's a production unit but the design is a bit uncharacteristic. It looks more like a flush-fit insert than a stove really. And yes, someone has cleaned and primed it with some standard red primer.

I don't see anything inside for retaining the sidewall firebrick, which would concern me a little.

Yes you are correct, there was not firebrick in it when I got it but it does have a baffle-sitting on the bottom during the pic. Since then I have put firebrick on the bottom and welded a piece of angle iron on the sides and back to support the side firebrick. I also took off the pedestal and put on 1 1/2" square tube legs of the same height since the pedestal was flimsy. The stove has never seen a fire because there was no signs of it ever being repainted and no soot inside. Also, the glass looked new, no scratches or signs of cleaning. I sanded it down and painted it black but added shielding to the sides, back, and bottom. Does anyone know of some kind of "kit" sold that supplies the metal and the door and you put it together? If you look at the pedestal there are two rivet holes for some kind of plaque but there was nothing on it when I got it. If you look under the door on the ash pan you will see a plaque that states something to the effect of "Danger-to prevent creosote fires inspect and or clean chimney monthly." That was not homemade. I am sure someone on the site has heard of this stove before....just waiting for that reply. Thanks

Yeah, I noticed the holes in the pedestal and wondered if there wasn't some plaque that was supposed to go there. Good to add the shields, it couldn't hurt, and if you added lower brackets to the rear shield you could also mount a blower on the back of it if you wanted.

Personally I kind of like it....especially that brass door!

epd166, If you can not find out anymore about this stove you should really follow NFPA 211 standards for install. How close is it to the wall? NFPA 211 would require 36 inches. Manufacturers reduce this drastically with third party testing like UL. But if you don't have that then it needs to be 36 inches. Pictures can be deceiving but it sure looks close. Just concerned.

x2, I was going to post the exact same thing. The insurance company will require the 36" distance to be followed without a UL listed stove.

Wow...you pressed that stove into service fast. The pic didn't come up when I last responded, and it looks good but yes, the clearances look a little tight for an undocumented stove.

Before I did anything it was preapproved by the building inspector with the shielding added. As far as the insurance they asked me to fill out a form and I have included all that information. Also, the building inspector knew everything about the stove and approved it for use with 12" clearance. So I would think I am covered since I have asked everything and got it preapproved and it was inspected afterward and signed off as approved. :)
