I've done 0 scientific data accumulation with these. I do not have a scale, a grater/sifter for fines, or a temp meter to do all the things Jay does on his extensive tests. These results are my personal real-world results, thoughts, and opinions from USING them. I currently have all 3 types in the house, all have been burnt on the same stove setting of 'low' (no thermostat) in a clean stove and have kept my house comfortable, even with last nights' low of 26!

To preface, I would buy all 3 again. Each is a good pellet, but I need 1 more ton for the season. So, In trying to narrow down what I want to buy next, I decided to rate my top 3 into the 'best for me' so that I can get another ton of it and be happy with my decision.

To tally,
First gets 3 points, 2nd 2, and last 1 point.

Here's what I rate them on based on several factors that matter to ME.

Price
1 Cubex
2 Hamer
3 Oakies

At my local dealer, Cubex is the cheapest at 245, hamers are 250, and oakies are 255 per ton, as of this writing.
(broken link removed to http://btpellet.com/price_list)

Bag Quality
1 Cubex
2 Oakies
3 Hamer

Handling the bags as I do to pick up by the half ton (all my truck can handle), load, unload, handle, stack, and store in my basement area takes a manual effort and the quality of the bag is a big thing for me. Nothing worse than having a trail of pellets and 15 ripped bags in storage just from handling.

Cubex has the toughest bag. I would rate the Oakies and Hamer a tie for 2nd in terms of quality, but I actually ripped more hamer bags (8) than oakies (6) in my last stock, so oakies get the win over the Hamers. I ripped ZERO Cubex in moving.

Smell
1 Hamer + Cubex (tie)
3 Oakies

As i store in my finished basement behind a 'false' wall (those cheapo aluminum pre-fab stud kits forms a little wall around the furnace/oil tank/pellet storage room/electric box), smell is a factor to the living space.
The oakies, while not horrible in smell, do have a very STRONG scent to them. I KNOW they are in there. I cannot say the same for the other 2. This is likely related to the bag.

I rent out this basement room to a friend of mine, so keeping him not smelling like pellet is a big factor. He complained about it the day we brought them home. The scent has gone down a bit in the 2 weeks they've been in the house, but it is still noticeable.

Fines
1 Cubex
2 Hamers
3 Oakies

All are very low compared to other brands I've burned, but the Oakies clearly contain the most fines out of these brands. It usually settles to the bottom, So i'm able to keep most of them out of the hopper. I would say this is a non-issue with all 3 brands, and if weighted, I would leave this test with little weight.

Clinker output
1 Oakies
2 Cubex
3 Hamer

The Oakies just burn so well. The ash spread when a new pellet drops from the auger creates a perfect 'firework' of hot ash. The burn pot stays VERY clean, and even after manual stops mid-burn, nearly the entire burn pot is completely burned and dispersed.
The Cubex do leave some clinkers. I had to spoon out a few before re-starting the stove for night time burn after being manually shut of in the morning.
The Hamers produce the largest clinkers. A few days of burning these in a row and the burn pot is literally full of it.

flame height/output
1 Oakies
2 Cubex
3 Hamer

This is a weird test, sure. My stove doesn't have an air adjuster. The manual says its there, but, the picture does not exist on my stove. I even had a friend who burns come over and dig around inside to make sure i'm not retarded or blind. It isn't there.
As such, the flame that is generated is important to me. The Cubex and Hamer burn similar. On low, there is very little flame exceeding the burn pot. Very low flame, very orange.
The Oakies burn much taller. The flames come up a few inches above the burn pot. The flame is also a brighter white with hints of blue at the base. From my reading, this is the best flame to have for msot efficiency and least pollution.

Heat Output
1 Oakies
2 Cubex
3 Hamers

This is measured with my hand in front of the grate. There is a CLEAR difference in the Oakies being the hottest. The Cubex do seem to be a bit hotter than the Hamers, but not much.

Final sore:
Cubex: 18
Oakies: 14
Hammer: 11

So, it looks like i'm buying a final ton of the Cubex.

If Oakanagan improves their bag quality, they can easily gain 4 points, moving them into first/tie which would make them a contender based on price alone (which is the metric likely to change at will). Sadly, in this case, for me, it's the bag they are packaged in that is stopping me from buying them again.

If Hamer drops their price just $5-$10 and improves their bag, they too can be right back in the contention mix.

Again, Your results may vary. You really can't go wrong with any of these 3 for the sole 'staying warm' factor.

I've burned the Okies before and loved them. I also had to load 1/3 of a pallet at a time into a small 2 wheel drive truck to get them home. Not ONE bag ripped after being loaded, unloaded, and stacked in the basement. I've heard they "may" have changed bags in the last year, but careful handling would all but eliminate ripped bags.
At the price difference you were quoting, I'd surely buy the okies due to the heat output difference. What can I say, I like heat! All 3 are excellent pellets IMHO.

Nice writeup.
Been looking for the Hamers and Cubex in my area but they seem to be a rare
commodity around here. The Okies have some competition!

Applause from this tester. Nice write-up! When I retire I will send you my gear! :-)

As far as I know BTU is working on thicker bags for the Okies.

nice test briansol.i love the okies and will be picking up a skid soon.never had the pleasure of dumping a bag of cubex in my stove but i hope the opportunity arrives soon.
hey Tink.they have hamers at Acushnet Alternative Heat 774-202-6666 if your'e ever in that neck of the woods.$260 a ton.i'm getting a couple bags from a friend of mine to try before i buy

Careful Handel can only go so far. I'm a brute. I certainly don't TRY to rip any bags. But,t hey do get man-handled and lifting and stacking and moving takes its toll on the cheaper thinner bags, and it shows.

lol I appreciate it.

This is really good news. A new bag for next year, and we have a clear winner (provided the bag holds up... new doesn't always mean better)

8:25pm here, and i'm debating turning off my stove. ITS TOO DAMN HOT! lol 76 or something up stairs right now, which is too hot for me. I'm a 68-70 guy.

Hamer's $250?, you live in central ct, close to if not walking distance to primo pellets which are $239 a ton not $250......... bt? or ct pellets is your dealer?
Correction read some more BT is your dealer.
You forgot to add the "dust factor" rating, drop a bag of oakies in and better wear a breathing mask, plus most of us probably have stoves like me in there living rooms, weekly dusting of furniture required, wife even requested i drop pellets out in porch then make 3 trips in per bag to dump in my hopper with coal bin...yea right!

I burned Oakies 99% of last season. I initially loved them and I still love the heat they put out. But, as the season went on, the dust became an issue here too. We had the dusty furniture as Pellet-King described too, but more importantly, it started aggravating my wife's asthma . She requested that we not get Oakies again, unfortunately. (sorry, BTU!)

I've been trying different hardwoods in this early part of the season. Probably going to order a few tons of Barefoots, but I have 3 bags of Maine Woods ready to go as one last sampling before I order something for the season. I wish I could find someplace local that has Cubex to try. Oh well, another time.

Primo in wallingford is 35-45 min away. x 2 to pick up a full ton = not worth the drive. It will cost more more in fuel.

bt is less than 4 minuets from me. The owner lives a 1/4 mile up the hill from me.

I didn't rate on dust, because frankly, they are all dusty. I vaccum at least 2-3 times a week around the stove area and mantel and there's still dust everywhere. And thats with any brand.

Take a look at this thread. Watch the video in the beginning, and if that's something you might want to make to clean your pellets to help your wife's condition, look down the thread for post # 13-18.

Maybe to lower the dust factor Okanagan needs to push there pellet's thru the dies at a higher compression, make them more "shiny"?

briansol I was wondering if somehow you were burning the old Okies bag? I now that last winter the Okies bags ripped quite easily. I can attest to that. I remember buying some test bags at my local BJ'S club and being disgusted as a couple of bags opened up with my finger pressure and spliied out as I loaded my car. The bags as I recall had a lot of clear material.

The new bags are and much more rugged. I have yet to damage a bag. My new bags have no clear plastic and are cream colored with green lettering.
If need be I can post a picture. I do not remember when the new bags went into production, but think it was late 2009.

My oakie bags are white with green lettering. no clear material, no cream colors.

Dust. This has been an issue for some and we have addressed it at the mill level. We did install a $100,000 piece of equipment recently that cools the pellet to room temperature and coming off the line and vacuums the pellet before it goes into the storage area ready for bagging. Right before the pellet is bagged, it is vacuumed again and this has made a huge difference. I’m not trying to be smug here, but pouring your pellets into your hopper slower can also help with the dust.

Unfortunately, from the time we make a pellet till the time it ends up in your house and actually used can be several months and I have no way of knowing how old your pellets are. So you could easily have some pellets that were made before this change at the mill was made. But we have tried to correct this problem and someone suggested we make them more “dense” and more shiny. We have to get the pellet as dry as possible (the drier the pellet, the hotter it will burn), yet not too dry as to cause other problems (dust and not holding together properly)…so this is a fine line, but hopefully we have gotten it right.

Great news, BTU. I'm sure I will try and get some of the "new, improved" batch at some point to sample again.

Keep sending those okanagans my way, only great things to say about the product and way the they handle their dealers!

Thanks for the tip!
Last time I dropped in they only had Barefoot and Corinth.

I burned a couple tons of Okies last year and couldn't be happier. That said, I was also very happy with the Cubex I tried. My local dealer had a great sale on the Cubex this Spring so I jumped on two tons. I still couldn't resisit the call of the Okanagans so I sprung for a ton of those as well. I, personally, love the smell. I only burned just over two tons last year so the extra pellets will go towards my 2011/2012 season. What I buy next year will depend on price and availability. (Okies or Cubex)

I think all 3 are good pellets. if you have all 3 available, then go with price.

IMO , a more expensive pellet can actually be cheaper and save money by putting out more heat. Instead of saving $5 on a bag of pellets, it may actually cost you $10 , because of the lower heat output. I am prejudiced after burning several "cheaper" pellets. I now burn Okies, only. As I said, it's just my opinion.

I think the covers on the lot are fine. I helped the loader guy unbound my skid. The 'tarp' was 100% intact and the inner plastic wrap was tight all the way down the sides. Even the skid was a full bottom skid.

Oakies in a cubex-like bag = clear winner and i'll probably never buy another brand, unless there is a massive price difference (ie, SIH becomes available in the area at $100 less a ton). If J didn't get you a bag, let me know and i'll ship one off to you.

I have cubies and a few other tougher/thicker bags on the way to him. Shipped them out this morning, So he'll have them by next weekend. :-)
