I scrounged up a maple tree last year. I didn't know what kind but was hoping it was the kind that Eric seems to rave about. I've reached it in the woodpile and it seems kinda light in weight. It also isn't giving long hot burns, more like a softer hardwood. I guess it isn't the good sugar maple, hunh? Are the other maples considered average woods? It burns, I'm warm tonight, just isn't the maple I was hoping for I guess.

Maybe a red or silver maple? Most of what we have around here is the silver variety - about the lowest of all maples. It's OK, but not too impressive compared to oak and hedge which we also have in abundance. Although I guess it could all be in the frame of reference...if all you have is fir and pine, any maple starts to look pretty good.

A good bit of the cuts I just got are I believe silver maple. It is light and certainly doesn't burn like oak. But its better than pine and the price was so right. I am ok with it.
Won't be dry this season anyways. But it will burn just the same. Less dense and more ash, but thats ok its all in pricing for me.
