So I went shopping for another saw today. For the amount of wood I'm cutting lately, my MS290 is just to slow for me. I need/want a saw with more grunt. Problem is I'm not sure what to get. Specs between saws slightly vary but the prices sure as hell jump up. The 290 is 56.5cc and the 391 is 64.1cc. In a real world application, how much difference in power is this? The 391 was $529 and that is about as high as I want to pay for saw. The magnums were out of my price range starting in the mid $800's.

390's are good saw's. May look at 036,360,361 used saw.

+1 on the 361. ive used and abused that saw these last couple years. and its really takin a beating. It really has takin some raw abuse.

Buy once, cry once--if you'd bought the right saw to begin with, you'd have saved money (and aggravation) in the long run. That being said, you should be able to get decent money for the 290--sell it and pick up a gently used 361 or new 362.

How much power difference is there between the saws. 290 vs. 361 or 391? On paper 8cc's seems like squat. I know they are all good saws, what saw has the most power for the buck?

well power for the buck would really be a ms460, but ,..... anyways, lol,... i just bought a 391 yesterday and went through 3 large white oaks,...... I like it ,..... for a mid sized saw,.... its pretty snappy

It's relative specs that matter when comparing on paper.
64.1 - 56.5 = 7.6cc. That's a 13.5% increase in displacement--quite noticeable in the chainsaw world.

A 362 will cut with a 391. In general, you can expect pro saws to have better low end than landowner class saws.

Most power for buck?

Stihl MS391 (20") = 559.95/64.1cc = $8.74/cc

Makita 6401 (20") = $599/64cc = $9.36/cc (I bought mine a few months ago at $472/64cc = $7.37/cc, no tax, free shipping.)

Stihl MS460 (20") = $989.95/76.5cc = $12.94/cc

The 6401 gets lots of rave reviews, especially by those who've upgraded to the big bore kit. Take a look at your local HD rental center?

cant really throw the 460 in that group. But the more cc's you go the higher the price per cc gets. Like try north of 100cc's

I have a 390 and it will handle most everything I cut. I did get a 660 for the really big stuff but you will definetly see a big difference with a 390/391, it is almost a whole horsepower more.

I agree, but I put it in there because crackshot added it to the discussion. I added the 6401 because it used to be (along with the 7900/7901) one of the best values in terms of cc's for the buck.

Where do the Husky fall in that range?

There all in the same ball park. Once there is a great deal on a new saw the gap will close quickly once the buzz is out there.

If you are upgrading from a 290 go to a Pro 361. Don't get me wrong, I have a MS390, but when I bought it new it was only about $120 more than a MS290, I think about $470. The 391 is alot more expensive than that, you might as well go 361 if you are going to spend $500+.

I didn't see a 361 at my dealer, and I'm not seeing one in the catalog. Was it replaced with the 362 maybe?

YES!

I just looked up the 362 it was retailing for $700 :bug: at my local dealers.... think I am going to have to pass on that upgrade :-S
I was thinking I would be willing to spend maybe $100-150 more than I did on my 290 (say up to $500) to get some more power but over $300 more is a bit much for me. Thats nearly double the cost!

$700 is pretty steep for a 60cc saw.......

Yea, I have to agree thats to the point where you just have to say NO!

yep...... and then save just a little more and get a 70cc

Get a good used one...you can get one under $500 easy

$700 is too high. You actually check with the dealer?

S

Just for comparison purposes, the last Dealer Suggested Retail Price here before they were removed from the website was USD$609 for the 361-20".

My dealer says $650 w/18" bar.
