Was at my local stihl dealer and was looking at the 270 and 290. Really like the power to weight ratio with the 270 compared to the 290. The 290 with more power is priced at $399 whereas the 270 is $459 with a few less cc's but after some talking he noted that the 270 was being replaced with the 271 and they would give a closeout price of $399. Seems like a pretty good deal what do you think? I will mostly be cutting douglas fir, hemlock, and alder with. Thanks

I'd definitely go with the 270 at that price. The big reason I bought the 270 over the 290 was the anti-vibration. The 290 doesn't have it, but I believe the 291 does. My elbows aren't that great anymore, and I can cut a lot longer with the 270.
I have a 290 that I just love, but that sounds like a great price.

I think the 270 is underrated--it is nicely balanced and cuts smoothly--at that price I'd definitely choose it over the 290. Good luck.

Hmm, what all bar length do you guys recommend on the 270?
Eventually I would like to get a smaller / lighter saw than my 290, preferably without loosing to much power. I have 20" bar and as several on here say thats a bit much for the 290 but it does ok. Most of the trees I have been cutting are less than 20" anyhow. I'd like to have two saws for backup purposes anyhow so I am keeping my eyes open for a used one. I'm thinking about going shorter on bar length next time, like 14-16" and a more aggressive chain. But for my 290 I already have two 20" bars and two chains - and with the granberg sharpener both chains still look like new even after probably a dozen sharpenings.
