I'm in the process of installing an EKO 40 boiler. Mixing valves...3 way or 4 way...? I'm confused!

A four way valve can be used to incorporate boiler temp protection as well as mixed temp to your emitter(s). A three way is typically used just for limiting or controlling the temp going out to the system.

So the i series mixing valve can be used instead of a thermic valve?

It can be configured (programmed if you will) via the dip switches on it, in a few different ways. You can have it provide outdoor reset of your system temp along with boiler protection or set it up to supply a fixed temp to the system, again with boiler protection. Much more versatile that a thermostatic valve.
