So got ahold of someone that has 10 cords of "oak" and about another 80 or so to clear out.


told him i was offered 6 logs 12' lengths from 18' to 36" dia for 200 he responded Oh i wouldnt charger you that much but make me a offer



what would be a not a slap in the face offer???

ABOUT how many cords would 6 logs about 12' length with about 20" dia make me


at first he contacted me to use my splitter in exchange for wood but he ended up buying one so this is where we are


he said the lot is MAINLY oak, red oak, and ash

i would go after the oak and ash

my guess is that about each log that size would be 1/3 of a cord. Volume calcs give me 26cu ft per log, but then you split it up and get more.

I'd say 6 logs is about 2 cords after split and stacked.

I'll let someone else give you a reasonable estimate, but I've always guessed that you got delivered and stacked price is X, You pick up price (split) is X/3, You pick up unsplit rounds= X/4, You pick up logs=X/5, you come do all the work=Free.

So, around here a cord is around 130 bucks, so I'd offer him X/5 which would be about $25 per cord. Maybe offer $10 per log? I may be way off if prices in NJ are much higher (seems that I remember they are)

It sounds like he just needs someplace to get rid of all that quality wood, and is just looking to get minimal compensation. Danno is right - when you are the one doing the lions share of the work, the cash value is very little. I'd say offer him $50 for giving you access, and see what he says. I really think thats more than fair, and he'll probably let you take as much as you want. I couldn't see paying very much if I was the one that has to buck/haul/split/ and stack everything myself.

I consider a full level bed of a full sized pick up worth 100 bucks. That's the only way I can estimate it in my head right now. you should get almost 2 cord from that after splitting Am I close to it on that assumtion ? I'm talking about the green 8 or 9 foot logs.

I think he was saying that a flat truckload of processed wood runs about 100 bucks. I'd estimate that means a cord is anywhere from 150 to 200. so maybe 80 bucks MAX for those two unprocessed cords. I'd think that less is still reasonable.

If he trust you and you trust him just come up with a price per cord(before hand) and then just pay him on actual wood received.

yea he responded to me i sent him a log to cord calculator in the response and he was shocked lol he seems like a stand up guy and we are meeting up Saturday (ill take pics) and see what deal we can come up with.

im hoping it can be a good one its in a open lot so i am going to see if i can take the tree down limb it cut into sections this way i do the work = min cost i wouldnt mind if he droped them and had them ready for me to cut into lengths either


but from what we have been talking about there is LOTS there he said close to 100 cords or more. ill be happy with 5 (for now)

If you have to move the wood and do all the work to process it, I think an offer of $50 per cord is generous. Around here I think you can get logs delivered for around that price (I have heard, although I haven't actually done it). A lot depends on where you are. Near a large city wood is more expensive, farther out in the country, especially where there is a lot of logging, logs are cheap. i think it also depends how much wood you plan to buy. I'd expect a nice volume discount on 80 cords.

I would say the $50.00 per cord to be max, around me the tree guys will deliver a cord of rounds for around 60-70 a cord. Usually a very generous cord to boot.

I think you are on to something here. I also like the "per truckload" idea, but combining your idea with that one could be a great way to do it.

One log is about 26 cubic feet or about one fifth of a cord
Five logs equals about one cord

I believe tree length deilvered in this area is about $100 per cord (and you get about five cords per truckload). You also get wood that I consider inferior to oak (ash, white birch, soft maple)

When you go there, go ready to buck and split onsite. A 18-20" long round of freshly cut read oak about 18" in diameter is really freaking heavy. I snagged 10 loads from work this summer when we cleared a lot for a new building...I never weighed it but I estimate each round was easily in the 60-70lb range.

I think if you have already come to an agreement with your friend about the wood, you should follow through with that - and not flake out - especially since he has 80 more cords that may become available.

If it were me, I would also get the $20 permit and get that state park wood also.

After many years of cutting wood, my motto is 'get while the gettins good' as I have seen years where pickins were slim and/or when I've been hurt or for some other reason haven't been able to get as much wood as usual. For that reason, I take almost all the wood I am offered. as long as its stacked up off the ground its not like its going to go bad or anything.
