How do these things work? Saw it in the pictures in a house for sale in my area. I think you'd have major smoke issues, glass fouling and lake of ember protection...

Most I have come across don't really have problems with smoking.
 
Glass fouling though? Is it mostly fixed glass with one opening for loading?
 
That's one of the coolest wood burning appliances I've ever seen.
