Been using my masonry chimney that has wood insert in it for quite a while. Inside the house and above the roof, it transitions to a more aesthetic, looking brick, w inside of the attached garage, where the backside of the fireplace and smoke chamber area are in an attached garage and constructed mostly of block. (Multilevel house). I’ve always figured that the block was used instead of brick for convenience and probably cost when built.

Figured I’d ask if the block used in this way is pretty standard for areas where aesthetics aren’t important (like garage).

Yes it's very common. Much cheaper materials and much faster to build so less labor.
