The Jotul 550 manual states that I need 48" clearance with heat shield 156448 for 11.5 wood mantel. The problem that I have only 41 1/2". What can I do? I don't want to remove the wood mantel.

Thank for your help

I'm assuming the Jotul mantle shield sits right above the insert. I'm surprised it doesn't buy you a greater reduction in clearance. I cannot say if this would fly with Jotul, or your insurance agent, or your building inspector, but it would seem that a second mantle shield (attached to the mantle itself, rather than on the insert) would be good for another 6". But I ain't in charge.

I read the manual and it stated that in the U.S. you needed 57 3/4" from the floor for a 11.5" mantel the heat shield will give you a few extra inches. 41" doesn't sound right? did you check the manual and see how it's measured in the diagram?

Are you saying that with the heatshield you are still too close?

Yes.The manual states that with mantel heat shield 156448 for a combustible mantel 11.5" wide ,you need 48" from the hearth surface to lowest mantel surface. I only have 41 1/2". Is there any thing that can be done so I can use this stove. I want to keep the Beech Wood mantel in place.

Thank for any help.

Move the mantel upwards, use your best carpentry skills to make extensions that always look like they were there

Maybe it would help to include a picture of your fireplace.
