Has anyone had any experience/luck building their own refractory panels? The panels on my fireplace need to be replaced and I was thinking of building my own

My idea was to use some sort of concrete board like Hardie backer and add firebrick to it with the high temp fireplace mortar. The thin firebrick is under $2 a piece. A whole factory refractory panel set is almost the cost of my fireplace.
