making your own pellets

i've tried to research making my own pellets but have found very little information. what do i need in terms of sawdust or wood scraps. where can i get a machine to make them, or can i make my own. and out of what. what kind of wood do i use. any ideas would help.

don't bother. investment isn't worth the return if you don't have any equipment already.

There was somebody here last year that had a link for a machine to make pellets.

After some discussion, it came out that it was not really economical to make your own pellets on a small scale unless you got the sawdust for free (ie you own a small lumber mill or a carpentry buisness)

i have googled small pellet mills in the past and could only find 1 or 2. they had no description of usage. i forget the site i found them on. but they werent very helpful

I've seen them on Ebay but not something that looks economical or timely on a homeowner use scale

and the homemade variety using the pelletpro's pellet mill only makes standard quality pellets..if You want premium grade pellets it requires a commecial pellet presss.

If you have an extra $1.5 mill that will get you the correct equipment. Approx. 2 years for trial and error and some more money. Then line up 1.3 to 1.5 tons of saw dust to turn a ton of pellets.

Yes it can be done but if it was so easy why have more mills gone under than are making pellets right now?

But if you get a good pellet let me know I am getting close to 2,000 tons sold this year.

tlux, I have myop's site down, and also (broken link removed) if you keep navigating, you will eventually find pellet machines. there was one guy on youtube i viewed recently, it was under cleaning pellets in this forum a while back. He bought a machine from china, the machine wasnt as large as I thought it would be, and would produce 2.5 tons per hour. Like kinsman stoves said, unless you have a huge supply of raw materials without having to truck them, then costs might be prohibitive. There are lots of small machines out there, but you have to add a binder, then dry them on a rack. myop's site will give you the best info,,,,,,good luck
